Van Huystee Consultancy
Friso van Huystee, Van Huystee Consultancy
Friso helps businesses and organizations make better decisions using modelling, scenario analysis and simulation.
Solving problems is what makes him tick. The more complicated the better! Usually in the field of data (analysis) using skills he picked up studying econometrics enhanced with years of consulting for a wide range of companies.
His passion for food drove him to a 3-year stint as a professional (sous) chef where problems consisted of optimizing creativity under stringent time constraints.
Analysis should not be just crunching numbers. He believes it should always support the end goal: helping his clients create insight and solve their problems
He does this by:
- …showing results in a meaningful, concise and visually appealing way. Not just showing a bunch of numbers and charts, but clear conclusions that are visually attractive. Saying more by showing less.
- …making sure that his solutions/analysis can be used operationally by the client themselves without the need for expert assistance
- …keeping it simple (as possible): for example, multivariate modelling is not required when improving your weekly reporting pack
Track: Storytelling with Data
Everybody loves a good story! We all want our ideas, thoughts, or analysis to create an impact and we create stories to do so. Especially in an Obeya you want your story to travel beyond your own team or department and act as a starting point for further inquiry, discussions, or decisions. For this to happen, the story must be recognized and understood by your audience. As we know from the eleventh principle of Obeya it is the data owners responsibility to ensure that information is easy to consume, readily available, up to date, and visually attractive. In this learning session he focuses on the last part, how to make it visually attractive.
Not just because pretty things increase overall happiness, although that is a nice side effect, but mostly because this will help you convey your story and your ideas. He believes we can increase the overall effectiveness of data visualizations.
As more organizations and companies are increasingly data driven, more and more charts and graphs are cranked out every day. Let’s make them more attractive!

Over 250 attendees loved last year’s Obeya Summit!
Inspiring! The genuine sharing of knowledge at all levels is very cool.
If you’re just starting with Obeya, you can learn things here, but even those who have been working with it for a long time still learn new things.
Very meaningful day! My key takeaway today?
“Don’t check, Study” – from Bjarne, I could definitely do more of that.
The people are sincere and very nice, the ambiance, the location, the lighting, the music. A really nice setting! And the catering was very good! Only a pity there was no chocolate at lunch.
