Obeya is a system, a concept, a philosophy, defined by a particular set of ideas (“Obeya principles”) used for inclusive and sustainable decision making.
An Obeya is a physical or digital workspace where strategy meets execution. Typical about Obeya is that it guides both behavior as well as a work environment design.
An Obeya provides a transparent and dynamic system in which multiple information sources (i.e. strategy, planning, performance and client data, etc) are combined to provide overview needed to make decisions together and accelerate learning. It creates a so called “single source of truth”.
Obeya connects people and creates alignment on the way forward, involving the right people at the right moment. It is a powerful communication instrument. Last but not least; an Obeya saves a lot of time, effectively cutting down on time spent on updating each other by combining several ad-hoc meetings in one.
The 11 Obeya Principles hosted by the Obeya Association are widely regarded as fundamental Obeya framework. The Principles provide a framework to understand, start and improve working with Obeya. They provide a common language of what an Obeya is and should do.
An Obeya can be approached practically by assigning two essential Obeya Roles: Obeya Builders and Obeya Hosts. The roles correlate with the essential capabilities needed to get an effective Obeya going. Obeya Builders arrange information in a way that it allows people to intuitively understand what is needed, understand the bigger picture and provides the necessary information for people to take decisions. Obeya Hosts are professionals skilled to work with the information provided in the Obeya and accellerate a group process from information, to learnings, to decisions.
In the book “Obeya – by the Obeya Association”, you’ll find practical guidelines for both roles. These guidelines are aligned with the 11 Obeya Principles and together form the basis of the Obeya framework. Learn more about Obeya here.
